Ney Calls USTR Report On China A "Step In The Right Direction"

02/14/06

WASHINGTON D.C. - Calling it "an important step in the right direction," Congressman Bob Ney (OH-18) expressed cautious optimism with a report released today by U.S. Trade Representative Rob Portman which promised a more aggressive prosecution by the Bush Administration against Communist China's unfair trade practices. The 29-page report titled, "U.S.-China Trade Relations: Entering a New Phase of Greater Accountability and Enforcement," was provided to the Congress this morning and is the result of a top-to-bottom review of U.S.-China Trade Policy. It is the first comprehensive statement of U.S. trade policy towards China since it joined the WTO in 2001.

Ney, who has been one of the most outspoken opponents in the Congress against Communist China's unfair trade practices, said, "I am very pleased that the Bush Administration appears to be moving in a more aggressive direction towards confronting years of unfair and unethical trade practices by Communist China. While I would have preferred to see this report go even further and address other important issues such as China's currency manipulation, I am hopeful that this signals a tougher enforcement policy by this Administration. The key now will be ensuring that these firm words are met with firm action and I will continue to serve as a voice in the Congress for those American workers, including many in my own congressional district, who have been disadvantaged by Communist China's unfair trade practices."
